Work From Home Stipends and Taxes: What US Remote Professionals Need to Know
Who can deduct a home office, who cannot, and how to get your employer to help pay for your setup. Plain English, with links to the the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules.

Which one are you?
You cannot deduct it, but your employer may pay
- Federal home office deductions for employees are suspended permanently.
- Ask HR about a home office stipend or reimbursement before you buy.
- Check your state: California, Illinois and a few others have expense reimbursement laws.
- Keep receipts. Reimbursements under an IRS accountable plan are generally not taxed as wages.
You may qualify for the home office deduction
- The space must be used regularly and exclusively for your business.
- Choose the simplified method ($5 per sq ft, up to 300 sq ft) or the regular method.
- Business equipment like a chair or monitor may be deductible separately.
- The deduction is generally limited by your business income.
Only the business side counts
- You can claim a home office for your side business if the space is used exclusively for it.
- Using the same space for your W-2 job may complicate the exclusive-use test.
- Keep separate records for each kind of work.
- This is where a tax professional is worth the fee.
Self-employed: simplified vs regular method
| Topic | Simplified method | Regular method |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | $5 x office square feet | Your actual home costs x business-use share of the home |
| Maximum | 300 sq ft, so $1,500 | No square-foot cap; limited by business income |
| Paperwork | Light | Receipts and Form 8829 |
| Best for | Small offices, simple records | Larger offices or high housing costs |
Copy this: ask HR for a home office stipend
Hi there, I work from home most of the week and want to set up my workspace properly to avoid back and neck strain. Does the company offer a home office stipend or equipment reimbursement? I am looking at a supportive chair, a monitor and a laptop stand. If there is a policy or a form, could you point me to it? Thank you
Can I deduct my home office on my taxes?
Only if you are self-employed and the space is used regularly and exclusively for business; the simplified method allows $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet, so $1,500 at most. W-2 employees cannot deduct it on their federal return, so ask your employer for a stipend or reimbursement instead.
